Weatherbox Doghouse Records has a history of discovering and bringing to light the next sound in alternative / progressive rock, and Weatherbox is the most recent testament to the independent labels insighteliciting a much needed innovation in music and passion in its results. Weatherbox is made up of four bandmates who came together in the sleepy town of San Diego. You may ask yourself how a group of southern California friends came up with lyrics that conjure a fantastic alternate reality that many can only achieve with hallucinogens, and the truth is we don’t really know. As with SoCal mornings when the fog recedes from the beach to show a glistening shoreline, Weatherbox quietly shines through the clutter of today’s rock music. Gigantic guitar hooks and earth-shattering drum work seem to burst through a cloud of smoke, as vocalist/songwriter Brian Warren provides a hefty dose of eclectic melodies with lyrics that harken back to a bygone psychedelic era. Equal parts progressive rock and symphonic guitar ambience, an undeniable statement. In the epic words of Warren, “That’s legit.” Eagle Scout| “There’s no one Greenville, Ill., quintet Eagle Scout resemble so much as Cursive circa 2002. It goes beyond singer/bassist Brandon Hunter’s caterwauling croon, a spitting image of Tim Kasher’s hard-bitten tenor. It’s in the chunky angularity of the guitar, which slashes out post-punk echoes of D.C. heroes Jawbox and Shudder to Think, and stuttering dynamics that go from slow to fast/soft to loud/sung to shouted and back again in a dizzying rush. The transitions display great craftsmanship, forging an evocative sound that’s a lot closer to emo’s original intent than anything on Drive Thru Records. Their terrific debut EP, Pandamonium!, crackles and soars from the chunky guitar tangle of “U.S. Americans” and its affirmation, “We don’t need salvation, because we only care about ourselves,” to the ringing, tuneful, dreamy guitars of the caustically exultant “Decatur.” This show serves to heighten anticipation for February’s debut LP, New Hands.” —Pitch Magazine The Great Outdoors | We are currently in the process of recording our first release. We are very excited about it and hope to have it out very soon for all you lovely people to hear. The Morleys |
